Vikane ® is a colorless, odorless gas that quickly penetrates materials during fumigation of an entire structure. The gas quickly dissipates from the fumigated structure and does no harm to the surrounding environment when released. Considered the No. 1 brand in whole-structure termite fumigation for more than 55 years, Vikane® gas fumigant has protected two million homes. Historical landmarks, churches, museums, research facilities, colleges, hotels, and ships have all utilized the fumigant in order to protect themselves from termites.
Drywood termites are a group of termites that build their nests within wood that’s free of moisture. Because drywood termites live inside wood where water is scarce, they have the ability to create water from the wood they eat. Their intestines absorb the water, mainly found in the droppings left behind. These droppings are one of the signs of drywood termites; piles of them surround infested wood.
It’s important to know the difference between drywood and subterranean termites, as they are both common pests. The critical difference between them is their habitat. Subterranean termite colonies live in underground nests close to moisture, as they require moisture for survival. Drywood termites, however, do not require as much moisture and live in dry environments.
Because Vikane® is a gas, the infested structure must be sealed before the fumigation process can begin. The gas absorbs into the wood within the sealed structure, eliminating all termites present. All doors and windows seal off the building with tape and a plastic sheet. Once sealed, the building stays closed for 2 to 72 hours, depending on the severity of the termite infestation. During this time, electronic equipment monitors Vikane® levels in the structure so levels remain constant. Afterwards, the building is ventilated for at least six hours, after which people can reenter.
Although Vikane® is efficient in fumigation, an agent called chloropicrin is also released during fumigation to further ensure all termites are truly gone. This agent also acts as a warning for humans who might enter the building prematurely, as it causes watery eyes and a scratchy throat. If occupants experience the previous symptoms in a building recently fumigated, they should leave immediately and contact the pest control company to have the facility retested.
Exterminators recommend tent fumigation as the most effective treatment in the removal of termites and other wood-destroying insects.
