How to Prepare Your Home for Fumigation

From causing property damage, to spreading disease, to being downright creepy , bugs and pests can cause a lot of anxiety to homeowners. Fumigation is an effective way to remove many types of invasive pests.

For some infestations, fumigation may be a necessary step for pest removal. Fumigants are, of course, poisonous to pests , but can also be harmful to house plants, pets, and people, so it’s important to take precautions. Here’s what you need to know to prepare your home for fumigation.

Remove all plants and animals.

This should be common sense, but it is important, so we’ll say it again. Fumigation is dangerous if not used properly! Before the fumigator comes, please be sure to remove all plants and pets away from the home.

Remove all food items and anything consumable to store off-site.

Anything consumable could be contaminated by the fumigants, so they need to be removed and stored off-site. This includes all food, medicine, dental products, tobacco, and pet food.

Make sure you have alternative lodging.

Once fumigation begins, you will not be allowed to reenter the home, so make sure you have somewhere else to stay for two to three days. Talk to the fumigator about how long the process is expected to last so you can make arrangements.

Rake gravel and mulch at least a foot away from your foundation.

Being able to seal the area is a big piece of the fumigation-puzzle. Removing items that may obstruct the tent is important. Your fumigator will talk to you about items that may need to be moved away from the perimeter of the home. These may include gravel, mulch, and plants.

Unlock and open all doors and cabinets.

Allowing the fumigant to pass through every space is what makes it so effective in removing pests. Unlock and open all doors, cabinets, drawers, appliances, and safes. Also, raise all blinds and window coverings to the fumigator has access to every area.
