Environmentally Friendly Solutions for Your Pest Problems

What’s that sticky mess in the back of your pantry? What’s hiding in the corners of your garage? What’s that constant puddle in the basement?
While these things might not take the #1 spot on our to-do list, they can certainly become bigger problems than this if left over time. Unsanitary conditions like these can cause serious pest control problems, especially as the weather warms up through spring and summer. Whether these problems hide your ability to see pest issues already happening, or they provide breeding grounds for bugs and rodents, these types of situations need to be taken care of before they become a bigger problem. Here are some more tips on keeping pests away from your home this spring.

Think of plants as bridges that insects can cross to enter your home. If you have grass or other plants growing right next to your foundation, insects are more likely to be present. We all know that many types of nuisance pests feed off of, or make homes in varying types of vegetation. Keeping a clear, plant-free zone around your home is an excellent habit for preventative pest control.
Basements and attics are usually used as a storage space, don’t often see a lot of foot traffic, and certainly aren’t our top priority to keep clean. After all, “out of sight, out of mind.” Take the time to sort through some of the things that could become cozy habitats for unwanted guests. Shred old records and receipts, donate used clothing or other goods to your local charity, and install shelves to keep everything else off the floor. Check for any cracks or holes that could be an easy entrance for bats, rodents, or bugs, and have them sealed. Dust the walls, sweep the floor, and inspect for any other signs of pests such as droppings or dead bugs.
There are plenty of pests that would be happy to make their homes in standing water in and around your home – centipedes, silverfish, and mosquitos just to name a few. Indoors, standing water can not only provide breeding grounds for pests, but can breed mold. It can also be a sign of other structural or plumbing issues with the home. Seal any leaks, and use a dehumidifier to dry the affected area to prevent these pests from infesting your home. Outdoors, standing water can be home to mosquitos, notorious disease-carrying pests. When not in use, turn baby pools and buckets upside down to avoid collecting water and becoming a mosquito habitat.
Of course, the best way to control pests is to prevent them altogether. If you find one pest, there are almost always more hiding out of sight.
