Talkin’ Trash: Ways You are Accidentally Attracting Pests to Your Home

YESpestpros • Jun 15, 2018

Of course, none of us actually want a pest infestation. Chances are, the moment we think something’s up, we start paying extra attention to what is causing pests and looking for ways to get rid of them. But what about preventing pest infestations in the first place? There are a few common things you might be doing that are actually attracting pests to your home by mistake.

You offer pests a free lunch.

There may be no such thing as a free lunch, but when it comes to pests, you’re stuck footing the bill. Leaving dirty dishes in the sink, garbage cans uncovered, and food out on the counter can be a pretty appealing to insects. Deter pests by keeping all food (including pet food) in sealed containers instead of rolled and sealed with a clip. Wipe up fruit juice or other sticky, sugary spills right away.

You’re a casual gardener.

Landscaping pros know that pine straw, compost piles, and untrimmed hedges or lawns attract insects faster than spring bulbs in bloom. Discourage pests by keeping your lawn and garden neat and keep plants two to three feet away from the perimeter of the house.

You’re a pack rat.

Nothing says “home” to pests like a pile of junk. Papers piled in drawers, clutter shoved in closets, and boxes of things you never found time to unpack can create a field day for pests.

You like fresh air.

Leaving windows and doors open for insects can Even once the kids are finally trained to close the door when they go in and out of the house, pests can still find ways in. Vents, fireplaces, broken window screens, and cracks in the window and door frames can all be entry points for pests.

You like fresh fruit.

Most of the time, fruit flies enter your home as a few lucky eggs who are able to hitch a ride on fresh produce from the grocery store. Store all produce in the fridge, where the cold temperature will not allow the eggs to hatch. Wash your fruits and veggies before eating or cooking with them.

Your home is a little soggy.

Lots of pests love moisture, and if it’s there, they’ll find it. Fix the leak in the bathroom. Don’t leave dishes in the sink overnight. Control moisture in the basement with a dehumidifier.

You live around trees.

Being out in nature is beautiful, until it finds its way into your home in unwanted ways. Ticks , spiders, and little critters like chipmunks and mice all love living around trees. Insects that feed on human blood can cause incredible discomfort. In many cases, we don't even know we've been bitten until after they have had their meal. Some inject an anticoagulant into the bloodstream to suck up their meal faster, while others clamp on and indulge in our life-preserving liquid. It helps to know which of these creatures to be watchful of before they attack. That way, we can take active steps to avoid the misery before they get a chance to start.

Waking up with tiny little bite marks all over your body is never a good thing. As you look at your irritated skin with the tell-tale red spots that itch persistently, you're sure that they result from bed bugs. No one wants their bed infested with these creatures, so you want to get rid of them as soon as possible. But before you decide to launch an all-out attack on these irritants, you need to be sure of what you're dealing with. Unfortunately, plenty of other pests may invade your mattress, and using the wrong treatment to eliminate the problem could delay getting you relief or even worsen the situation. Before you decide on a method of extermination, you need to make sure of what you're actually dealing with. Still, because these bugs are so tiny, you might wonder if they can be seen with the naked eye. The answer is - sometimes. Bed bugs are usually visible in the later stages of development, but there's a good chance that if you can identify bed bugs in their adult stage, many younger ones are lying around, just waiting to take a bite out of you.

They will seek the warm cozy interior of your home after temperatures drop, and once inside, they become a threat to your property and food and can cause rashes with their tiny hairs. Carpet beetles feature: “Mottled” coloring of black, brown, white, or yellow. Oval-shaped bodies. Adult length between 1/16 - 1/8 inches. The first concern with any infestation is safety.

Aracniphobs everywhere look to winter as a moment’s respite from spiders. The myth goes that spiders are cold-blooded and can’t survive the winter, but the truth is complex. There are 400 different species of spider in Indiana and 3,500 nationwide. Each one has different behaviors and approaches to surviving the cold. Some die off before winter, like the North American black and yellow garden spider, but others adapt. The body content of your post goes here.
