While preventative pest control is always the best pest control method, there are plenty of situations where pests are still a problem. Fumigation is an effective way to remove many types of invasive pests. In this blog, we’ll answer some of the most frequently asked questions about fumigation.

What is fumigation?

Fumigation is a pest control method where a structure is completely filled with a gaseous pesticide, often Vikane , to suffocate or poison the pests within the enclosed space.  There are two fumigation methods. One method is to seal the structure with plastic, tape, or other sealing materials. The other method is to completely enclose the structure in a “tent” of vinyl-coated nylon.

How long does fumigation take?

The length of the fumigation treatment depends on the scale of the infestation, but in general the fumigation process itself typically takes around 6-8 hours. However, because the fumigants are poisonous, you cannot be in your home during the fumigation or in the days following the treatment. You should plan to be out of the house for three days and two nights unless special arrangements are made.

Which pests can fumigation kill?

Fumigation is used to eradicate several types of pests, including termites , bed bugs , spiders, rodents , wood boring beetles, cockroaches , and more. For most of these pests, fumigation is used as a last resort because it is such an intensive process. However, depending on the type of pest and scale of the infestation, it may be recommended immediately by your exterminator.

What do we need to do to prepare our home for fumigation?

To prepare your home for fumigation, you must remove all living things from the home, including plants, pets, and people. You should also remove all consumable items, such as medication, food, tobacco, and hygiene items. Your exterminator may also provide special bags that can be used to protect food and hygiene items if desired.
