Signs of Bedbugs
There are a lot of myths surrounding bedbugs and bedbug infestations. For example, many people believe that bedbugs are microscopic or just very small. The truth is, though, that bedbugs are great at hiding in areas away from the light, where they are unlikely to be found. They usually spend a lot of time on a bed because that’s where they can feast on blood for a without being disturbed. They usually feed from three to 10 minutes until they become engorged before they go back into hiding until the next night. While bedbugs are certainly illusive, there are a few telltale signs of bedbugs infestations.
1. You notice itchy spots when you wake up in the morning that weren’t there before.
Most bedbug bites are initially painless, but later turn into itchy welts. They can appear on any area of skin exposed while sleeping. The bites may be difficult to identify, as they can sometimes be confused for flea bites, eczema, or fungal infections, and some people do not react to bedbug bites at all.
2. There are blood spots on your sheets and blankets.
Typically, the blood spots on the sheet or blankets are caused by the bedbugs becoming crushed (because, for example, you roll over in your sleep) after they have feasted on your blood.
3. There are dark or rusty spots of bedbug excrement on your sheets, mattress, blankets, or pillows.
Bedbug excrement can often be seen on sheets and mattresses that are lightly colored. It is dark or rusty brown in color and will often bleed like a marker spot on fabric.
4. You notice bedbug egg shells or shed skin in area bed bugs may hide.
Eggs and eggshells are tiny (about 1mm in diameter) and appear clear or white in color. Nymphs, or baby bedbugs, must shed their exoskeleton five times before becoming a full-grown adult. The skins they shed may appear pale yellow or brown and can vary in size.
5. You find live bedbugs.
Obviously, if you see live bedbugs, you know that you have a problem. Small-scale infestations can sometimes be difficult to identify correctly , though, because they are often mistaken for carpet beetles or other insects.
What should I do if I have bedbugs?
A female bedbug can lay hundreds of eggs in her lifetime and they are surprisingly resilient. This is why bedbugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of on your own. At the first sign of bedbugs, it is imperative that you call a pest control professional right away.
