Weather Effects on Pest Patterns in Indiana

YESpestpros • Sep 25, 2018

We all know that the weather can affect our energy bills, what we choose to wear, and even our moods. But have you ever considered the weather effects on pest patterns?

Here in Indiana, we have a saying. “If you don’t like the weather, just wait ten minutes. It’ll change.” If you’ve been a Hoosier for long, you know that saying holds truth. From extreme summers, to frigid winters, and everything in-between, weather effects on pest patterns in Indiana plays a big role in which pests we have to deal with and when they are at their worst.

Fall

As the temperatures begin to drop in the fall, many pests and insects will prepare for winter. As a result, you may start to see an influx of insects such as spiders or beetles coming into your home. These pests often stay out of sight and go unnoticed, and are usually harmless.

However, larger pests such as mice or chipmunks may be searching for an entry point into the home. Fall is an important time to make sure that any cracks, holes, or gaps are sealed. Following some simple preventative pest control maintenance procedures in the fall can pay off in the winter months.

Winter

For most insects and pests, winter weather indicates that it is time to find shelter for the season. Many pests hibernate to conserve energy and avoid extreme climates. Others migrate to warmer weather. Some species outlast the winter months by remaining only in nymph, egg, or larvae stages underground or in the water.

Other pests, such as rodents , are not as tolerant of winter weather any may seek shelter indoors. Pests who have found a way into the home often take residence in basements, attics, crawl spaces , and even inside the walls themselves. Be sure to contact a professional right away if you suspect a pest infestation in the winter months. Rodents can spread disease and damage the home.

Spring

As the ground begins to thaw and temperatures rise from spring, most pests begin to awaken from their dormant state. With the mix of warmth and moisture from spring showers, pests emerge from their winter nesting spots and activity increases. Bees and wasps awaken, termites swarm, and rains often bring ants indoors in search of dry ground.

Not only are pests becoming more active during the spring months, but they also begin their mating season. We often see increased activity as these pests are finding a suitable location for their nests, seeking food and water, and looking to mate.

Although the majority of pest movement in spring occurs outdoors, some pests will be looking for protected places, such as a home or barn to build a nest. Keep an eye out for any changes you notice inside your home, such as an ant invasion or other evidence of pest activity. Remaining aware of insect patterns around the home each spring will help you better notice any abnormal pest behavior to stop an infestation before it starts.

Summer

As the temperatures continue to rise and rain showers become less frequent, summer typically offers a reprieve from insects seeking shelter indoors. Usually, all they need is outside: food water, mates, and shelter.

weather effects on pest patternsJust because you may not notice as many insects inside your home during the summer months doesn’t mean that you won’t have to deal with them. As any native Hoosier can tell you, summer is famously known for high numbers of mosquitos. Increases in the number of mosquitos can often result from heavy spring rains, as mosquitos use water sources as breeding sites. Although mosquitoes won’t try to invade your home, they can certainly become a nuisance during outdoor activities, and they can even spread diseases such as West Nile and Zika Virus.

Mosquitos aren’t the only pests to look out for in summer. Other common summertime insects include ticks, bees , and wasps. Bees and wasps may build nests in openings of your home, beneath overhangs, or in the ground near the foundation. Like mosquitoes, ticks , bees, and wasps can present health risks to humans. You can help keep these pests from establishing a presence in your yard by enrolling in an annual pest control program like this one.

Insects that feed on human blood can cause incredible discomfort. In many cases, we don't even know we've been bitten until after they have had their meal. Some inject an anticoagulant into the bloodstream to suck up their meal faster, while others clamp on and indulge in our life-preserving liquid. It helps to know which of these creatures to be watchful of before they attack. That way, we can take active steps to avoid the misery before they get a chance to start.

We often think of fleas as a nuisance for your cat or dog. They have an annoying way of getting into their fur, and it can be a real problem to get them out. But it is their uncanny ability to get into your home and cause a significant infestation that is a source of concern for many, especially if their presence is not properly eliminated. Waking up with tiny little bite marks all over your body is never a good thing. As you look at your irritated skin with the tell-tale red spots that itch persistently, you're sure that they result from bed bugs. No one wants their bed infested with these creatures, so you want to get rid of them as soon as possible. But before you decide to launch an all-out attack on these irritants, you need to be sure of what you're dealing with. Unfortunately, plenty of other pests may invade your mattress, and using the wrong treatment to eliminate the problem could delay getting you relief or even worsen the situation. Before you decide on a method of extermination, you need to make sure of what you're actually dealing with. Still, because these bugs are so tiny, you might wonder if they can be seen with the naked eye. The answer is - sometimes. Bed bugs are usually visible in the later stages of development, but there's a good chance that if you can identify bed bugs in their adult stage, many younger ones are lying around, just waiting to take a bite out of you.

As their name implies, carpet beetles infest carpets and other fibers and are especially active during springtime. The first sign of an infestation is often a dead carpet beetle trapped in a window sill. But you can be sure if there’s one; there are many more. Carpet beetles typically live outdoors but are wintering insects . They will seek the warm cozy interior of your home after temperatures drop, and once inside, they become a threat to your property and food and can cause rashes with their tiny hairs. Carpet beetles feature: “Mottled” coloring of black, brown, white, or yellow. Oval-shaped bodies. Adult length between 1/16 - 1/8 inches. The first concern with any infestation is safety.

Aracniphobs everywhere look to winter as a moment’s respite from spiders. The myth goes that spiders are cold-blooded and can’t survive the winter, but the truth is complex. There are 400 different species of spider in Indiana and 3,500 nationwide. Each one has different behaviors and approaches to surviving the cold.
